One of the North Sea’s largest untapped resources, an oil field east of Shetland named Bentley, could produce over 300 million barrels of oil up until the year 2050.
With over 1.2 billion barrels of oil thought to remain in the North Sea before the discovery of Bentley, this single oil field could be an amazing discovery.
Xcite Energy, the company behind the Bentley oil field, is planning on using enhanced oil recovery techniques in order to maximise the recovery. The firm will be working in collaboration with oil giants Shell and Statoil to share technical and operational information to develop Bentley and a neighbouring oil field, Bressay.
Production will begin next year, with an expected 57,000 barrels of oil produced each day and possibly up to 317million barrels of reserves made over the next 35 years.
