Oil production in Nigeria has hit a worrying four-year low. Thieves and technical problems have caused frequent disruptions. Production has dropped to less than 1.9 million barrels a day from over 2 million barrels – the lowest rate since 2009. Meanwhile, it is estimated that over 150,000 barrels of oil are stolen on a daily basis.
Oil demand is on the rise in Europe. Recent government statistics show a rise in European market for the first time in two years. The increase, seen in both April and May 2013, correlates to data pointing to a growth in economic activity around the same period, including Eurozone growth this year.
A new oil discovery has been made in Kenya by oil exploration company Tullow Oil. Flow tests carried out at a discovery well in the country have smashed expectations and promise to bring positive results for the oil explorer. After a disappointing start to the year the new Kenyan discovery will be a welcome relief for Tullow Oil and its investors.
Several companies are currently exploring the possibilities of shale oil in Northern Ireland, and Enegi Oil is the latest company to apply for an exploration license. Since February 2011 the independent oil and gas company have carried out an extensive work program evaluating the Clare Basin Licensing Option and the possibility for shale oil, which they now believe to be highly prospective.
Measurement of the activity and flow of water is one of the most important flow measurement processes. The world’s population is constantly growing, but the level of available water isn’t so it is essential to ensure supplies are efficiently used. Flow measurement is central to the effective supply of clean water and the safe disposal of wastewater.
Ahead of next weeks Energy Bill release the Government has revealed some of their plans. In a move to create a more self-sufficient UK energy market the new Bill will include a shake up of the electricity market and an increased focus on low-carbon energy.
Gas prices in the US are showing signs of recovery after hitting lows earlier this year. In the run up to winter gas has doubled in price and the record levels of underground stocks are expected to be drawn from.
The Scottish National Party have announced their ambitious 2015 renewable energy targets. Alex Salmond, the First Minister of Scotland, aims to generate 50% of Scotland’s electricity from renewable sources by 2015 – eventually reaching 100% renewable energy by 2020.
